About
A monotype print is one of a kind: a beautiful 1/1.
There is no series, no edition. Just one piece of art. But it's not a one-shot. A single print can have many layers, many lives. It can take me in many different directions, most of which I don't imagine when I begin. The process of monotypes in particular reflects my life: simple at first with many detours and reinventions.
Planning and intention must meet with the inevitable element of surprise. I like having an end in mind—a color scheme or a shape perhaps—and then going with what appears on paper. The idea presents itself. I develop it, often bending to its will, sometimes trying to bend it to mine.
I like reading a first iteration to feel what comes next. I see a shape and want to build on it. I will protect the parts that seem properly realized and I work on the rest of it, or I might completely rework it, changing colors, shapes, orientation. I welcome the unknown. I relish the process of discovery.
